How Much Money Should You Make?

If you were to have asked the famed John Wesley this question he would have said, “Make all you can.” This answer was followed with “Save all you can,” and “Give all you can.”

How much money should a leader make is always a curious question. Leaders most always think they are worth more than they are currently making. Yet, recently I have spent time with several successful business leaders who have sold their businesses and who have reached levels that most people only dream about. The problem now is that they are bored. They made all they can and it is still not enough.

I think the question about how much a person should make is directly related to the heart of a leader. I believe that no one should be paid below the basic standards of job requirements. However, contentment usually brings a security that breeds confidence in a leader, eventually leads to greater leadership, which in turn leads to proper compensation. The opposite is true as well, though. The insecure leader who is constantly positioning for more pay because of a report they pulled off of the internet about salaries in their industry breeds insecurity, greed leads to selfish performance, which justifies a lower salary.

If you asked these wealthy businessmen about how much should a person make I think they would probably have a different answer now than before. They may agree with Benjamin Franklin who said:

“Money has never made a man happy yet, nor will it. There is nothing in its nature to produce happiness. The more a man has, the more he wants. Instead of filling a vacuum, it makes one. If it satisfies one want, it doubles and triples that want another way. The true proverb of the wise man can be relied upon: ‘Better is a little with the fear of the Lord, than great treasure, and the trouble within it.’”
